Museum of the Opera del Duomo

Unique in its kind, this museum is a true journey that takes you on a discovery of the places and artists that gave life to the monumental Opera complex. At the center of the museum is the spectacular Hall of the Ancient Façade, where on one side is a colossal 1:1 scale model of the ancient façade of Florence Cathedral built by Arnolfo di Cambio starting in 1296, never finished and destroyed in 1587. In front of this titanic backdrop are 40 statues from the 14th and early 15th centuries originally made for the facade by artists such as Arnolfo di Cambio, Donatello, and Nanni di Banco. On the opposite side of the room: the Gate of Paradise (1425-52), the famous North Gate of the Florence Baptistery, and Andrea Pisano‘s South Gate. Also among the works not to be missed are Michelangelo Buonarroti’s Pieta Bandini and Mary Magdalene.
